About us

Who We Are

The purpose of CPGUK is to inform patients of the ways in which they may be able to access medical cannabis.

Unfortunately, medical cannabis is not available on the National Health Service. Since medical cannabis was legalised in the UK in 2018, only a small number of patients have received medical cannabis prescriptions from the NHS. It is only possible to prescribe this medicine by specialists as a last resort, and funding must be obtained in order to cover NHS prescriptions.

We are a non-profit organisation dedicated to advocating for access to treatment for people with unmet needs who are unable to access treatment through the NHS.

If you are interested in learning more about cannabis medications in the UK, you have come to the right place. You can find all the information you need at CPGUK.

Popular Questions About Cannabis Medicines

Yes, absolutely. Since 2018, medical cannabis has been a legal prescription medication. As a patients group, we’re helping people to get access to much-needed medication and to get their prescriptions.

There are a variety of conditions that can be treated with medical cannabis when other medications and treatments have not worked. There are benefits for patients suffering from chronic pain, neuropathy, and psychiatric conditions.

Medical cannabis is currently imported from countries such as Israel, Australia, Canada, and more.

The importation process is very tightly regulated both by the authorities in the UK but also by the exporting country. The products have to be grown, prepared, and packaged to the strictest standards. The UK has some of the highest standards for quality and safety of cannabis medicnes (CBPM’s) in the world.

Medical cannabis is a plant and the industry is relatively young. This can mean that supply can fluctuate either due to a poor harvest, a regulatory change or a delayed shipment. However, 2022 has seen much more stability and we work closely with our partners to keep your medications available.

There are many differences between medical cannabis and the CBD products you see in stores, online, and in pharmacies over-the-counter. A medical-grade cannabis product is grown, prepared, and packaged under the strictest conditions. Many compounds in it are known for their medicinal properties, such as cannabinoids (like THC and CBD), as well as terpenes.

In comparison, hemp oil is used to produce CBD oil, which you can buy without a prescription. It is considered a food product and does not need to adhere to the same stringent standards as cannabis medicines. Generally, it is not as concentrated as prescribed CBD oils and is not considered a medicine.
