Sleep problems are one of the most common reasons UK patients report improvement after starting medical cannabis. Here is what the evidence shows and how to access treatment for insomnia.
Why Sleep Matters — and Why So Many People Struggle
Sleep is fundamental to physical and mental health, yet chronic insomnia and sleep disorders affect an estimated 30–40% of adults in the UK at some point in their lives. Around 10–15% of adults meet the clinical criteria for chronic insomnia disorder — defined as difficulty falling or staying asleep at least three nights per week for at least three months, causing significant daytime impairment.
Conventional treatments for insomnia include sleep hygiene education, cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), and short-term use of hypnotic medications such as zopiclone or benzodiazepines. While CBT-I is highly effective, access through the NHS is limited. Hypnotic medications carry risks of dependence and are not recommended for long-term use.
It is against this backdrop that many patients have turned to medical cannabis as a sleep aid.
Sleep as the Most Commonly Reported Benefit of Medical Cannabis
Across multiple UK Medical Cannabis Registry studies, improved sleep quality is consistently among the most frequently reported benefits of CBMP treatment. Patients prescribed CBMPs for a wide range of primary conditions — including chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety, and MS — commonly report significant improvements in sleep onset, sleep duration, and sleep quality as secondary benefits.
A 2024 registry analysis found that patients prescribed CBMPs reported statistically significant improvements in sleep disturbance scores at 1, 3, and 6-month follow-up intervals. These improvements were observed regardless of the primary diagnosis for which the CBMP was prescribed.
How Cannabis Affects Sleep
The relationship between cannabis and sleep is complex and dose-dependent. THC is known to reduce sleep onset latency (the time it takes to fall asleep) and to increase slow-wave sleep (the deepest, most restorative stage). However, at higher doses, THC can suppress REM sleep, which is important for emotional processing and memory consolidation.
CBD, by contrast, appears to have a more nuanced effect on sleep. At lower doses, CBD may have alerting properties; at higher doses, it may promote sleep by reducing anxiety and pain — the two most common causes of sleep disruption. Many patients prescribed CBMPs for insomnia receive formulations that combine THC and CBD, with the ratio adjusted based on individual response.
Can You Get a Medical Cannabis Prescription for Insomnia in the UK?
Insomnia as a standalone condition is not typically sufficient grounds for a CBMP prescription in the UK. However, if your insomnia is secondary to a chronic condition — such as chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety, MS, or another qualifying condition — your prescribing doctor may include sleep improvement as a treatment goal alongside the primary indication.
This is an important distinction. If you are struggling with sleep as a result of an underlying chronic condition, medical cannabis may be an appropriate option to discuss with a specialist.
