How to Use Cannabis Oil
Cannabis oil is one of the most commonly prescribed forms of medical cannabis in the UK. It is typically administered sublingually (under the tongue) or added to food and drinks. Here is a guide to using your prescribed cannabis oil safely and effectively.
Sublingual Administration
The most common and effective way to take cannabis oil is sublingually — placing drops under the tongue and holding for 60–90 seconds before swallowing. This allows the cannabinoids to be absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the mucous membranes, providing faster onset than oral ingestion.
- Use the dropper to measure your prescribed dose carefully
- Place drops under the tongue
- Hold for 60–90 seconds before swallowing
- Effects typically begin within 15–45 minutes
- Full effects may take up to 2 hours
Oral Ingestion
Cannabis oil can also be added to food or drinks. However, when ingested orally, it must pass through the digestive system, which means onset is slower (1–3 hours) but effects may last longer.
Dosing
Always follow your specialist doctor's dosing instructions. Start with the lowest prescribed dose and only increase as directed. Keep a diary of your doses and their effects to share with your doctor at follow-up appointments.
