Medical Cannabis Strains
Medical cannabis comes in many different strains, each with a unique profile of cannabinoids and terpenes. Understanding the differences between strains can help you and your specialist doctor choose the most appropriate product for your condition.
The Three Main Types
Indica
Indica strains are traditionally associated with relaxing, sedating effects. They tend to have higher CBD content relative to THC. Indica strains are often preferred for:
- Chronic pain relief
- Sleep disorders and insomnia
- Muscle relaxation and spasticity
- Anxiety reduction
- Nighttime use
Sativa
Sativa strains are traditionally associated with uplifting, energising effects. They tend to have higher THC content. Sativa strains may be preferred for:
- Depression and mood disorders
- Fatigue
- Daytime use
- Appetite stimulation
Hybrid
Hybrid strains combine characteristics of both indica and sativa varieties. Most medical cannabis products available in the UK are hybrids, bred to achieve specific cannabinoid and terpene profiles for therapeutic purposes.
Cannabinoid Ratios
In addition to the indica/sativa distinction, medical cannabis products are characterised by their THC:CBD ratio. High-CBD, low-THC products are often preferred for patients who want therapeutic benefits without psychoactive effects.
